Gut-Brain-Endocrine Axis- The Estrobolome

Hormonal health is not solely a story about hormones. For a significant number of women, the gut is where that story starts. Digestive and reproductive systems are frequently viewed as completely isolated but they share a highly active bi-directional highway. The vast web of neurons embedded throughout the gastrointestinal tract, is often referred to as the “second brain “. The trillions of microbe network living in the digestive tract — the gut microbiome, is known asestrobolome which act as a powerful regulator of circulating hormone estrogen. Estrogen is one of the body’s most important reproductive hormones helping to regulate many normal body functions like menstrual cycles, ovulation, preparing the uterus for pregnancy, bone and heart health, brain function and mood. https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!mdV4!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcdd5089d-4235-439e-9e3b-39eeef38feb2_1536x1024.png

As estrogen receptors are distributed throughout the body, estrobolome dysfunction has systemic consequences. When estrogen is metabolized by the liver, it’s then sent to bile to be excreted into the gut. When the estrobolome is healthy, this estrogen is safely removed as waste. But when dysbiosis is present, estrogen can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream causing estrogen dominance. If these bacteria are out of balance, it can lead to excess estrogen in the body, contributing to hormonal issues like PMS, endometriosis, fibroids, and even breast cancer.

Foods for oestrogen detoxification are plant fibres like broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale. For prebiotic feeding of estrogen metabolizing bacteria include garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus and slightly under ripe bananas. Fermented foods like fresh yogurt brings about bacterial diversity. For sustained fiber diversity flaxseed, chia seeds, pulses, oats are beneficial. A diet rich in nutrient dense foods with variety supports gut health and healthy hormones.

The estrobolome is not considered a treatment for hormone disorders, infertility, or PCOS. Instead, it represents one piece of a much larger picture.

3 things to stop doing if you have PCOS

a. 3 things to stop doing if you have PCOS (Now PMOS – Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome)

    ● What to avoid: White bread (maida-based), white rice, pasta, pizza crust, pastries, cakes, cookies, candy, sugary cereals.
    ● Include more whole grains, complex carbs, and high-fiber foods (aim for 40g fiber/day).

b. Skipping breakfast – why it’s not idea, especially for women in India

3 Big Problems When You Skip Breakfast:

  1. Hormone Imbalance
Skipping breakfast can cause higher cortisol (stress hormone). Especially for women, this disrupts menstrual cycles, throws hormones off balance, and can lead to fatigue and mood swings.
  2. Blood Sugar Rollercoaster
No breakfast usually causes massive hunger pangs at lunch. This puts us in a cycle of overeating, usually non-healthy foods that cause a sugar spike followed by fatigue andmore cravings. Which essentially means more unhealthy food choices like
  3. chai-samosa-biscuit bundle by 3 PM!
  4. Brain & Energy Crash
Your brain runs on glucose. No morning fuel can lead to frequent episodes of brain fog, poor focus, and the “can’t function before 10 AM” struggle that you might be familiar with.

What to Do Instead (5-Minute Indian Breakfasts):
